Vesela Kovacheva joined the Hamburg Institute of International Economics (HWWI) as a researcher in October 2007 and in 2009 she became a member of the research area Irregular Migration. In the frame of diverse international projects she conducts comparative research on irregular migration. In the project CLANDESTINO (Undocumented Migration: Counting the Uncountable – Data and Trends across Europe) she was responsible for the creation of a Database on Irregular Migration, which presents a critical appraisal and classification of estimates on the size of irregular migration in 12 EU member states.
Vesela Kovacheva has a BA in International Relations from the University of National and World Economy in Sofia (Bulgaria). In 2007 she got her master degree in European Studies from the Europa-Kolleg Hamburg with scholarships from the Konrad Adenauer Foundation and the Edmund Siemers Foundation. Along with irregular migration, her main research interests are internal mobility and integration in the European Union.
